About Chennai MRTS

Chennai MRTS full form is “Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System” (சென்னை மாஸ் ரேபிட் ட்ரான்ஸிட் சிஸ்டம்) is a metropolitan elevated railway line. MRTS Chennai was established in the year 01st Nov of 1955 and operated by SR (Southern Railways). It is a state-owned subsidiary of IR. It consists the system length of about 19.34 Kilometres or 12 Miles.

MRTS Chennai is the 01st elevated railway line in India. It is constructed at a cost of about Rs. 11,710 million that runs within the Chennai city boundaries from Chennai Beach to Velachery route and Velachery to Beach train route covering with the distance of about 19.34 Kilometres or 12.02 Miles. In order to gather all elevated railway lines and underground tracks inside the Chennai city under 01 organization, the  Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System has proposed over by the CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited)

MRTS Chennai Railway Lines

Although the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System is separated away from the Chennai Suburban Railway they both are integrated with a wider urban rail transit and also operated by SR. It consists of 01 railway line with the following phases

  • Firstly, Phase – 01
  • Secondly, Phase – 02
  • Thirdly, Phase – 03
  • Lastly, Phase – 04

Phase – 01

The Phase – 01 of Chennai MRTS Route is from Beach to Tirumalai (Mylapore). It has started in the year 19th Oct of 1997 with the railway budget of about Rs. 2,690 million. It runs through 08 Chennai MRTS stations with the distance length of about 8.55 Kilometres or 5.31 Miles

Phase – 02

The Phase – 02 of Chennai MRTS Route had divided into 02 parts of the following:

  • Phase – 02 (A)
  • Phase – 02 (B)

Phase – 02 (A)

The Phase – 02 (A) of Chennai MRTS Route is from Tirumalai (Mylapore) to Velachery. It has started in the year 19th Nov of 2007 with the railway budget of about Rs. 7,690 million. It runs through 09 Chennai MRTS stations with the distance length of about 11.376 Kilometres or 7.069 Miles

Phase – 02 (B)

The Phase – 02 (B) of Chennai MRTS Map is from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount. It has started in the year Oct of 2018. It runs through 03 Chennai MRTS stations with the distance length of about 5 Kilometres or 3.1 Miles

Phase – 03

The Phase – 03 of Chennai MRTS Route is from St. Thomas Mount to Villivakkam. It runs through 10 Chennai MRTS stations with the distance length of about 19.76 Kilometres or 10.41 Miles

Phase – 04

The Phase – 04 of Chennai MRTS Map is from Perungudi to Kalpakkam. It runs through 20 Chennai MRTS stations with the distance length of about 50 Kilometres or 31 Miles
