About Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is simply abbreviated as “NMR” located at Mettupalayam railway station of Tamil Nadu State. It consists of 1000 mm or 03 feet 3 3⁄8 inches meter gauge railways. It was established in the year 1908 by Britishers. Currently, it is operated by SR (Southern Railways) & is the only cogwheel railway in our country.

The NMR depends on its steam locomotives fleet. Nilgiri Mountain Railway changed to DL (Diesel Locomotives) on the Ooty to Coonoor train route run by toy train Ooty. The people who stay in local and the tourists conducted a campaign in order to return to steam locomotives in this section.

NMR Recognition by UNESCO

In the year 2005, the UNESCO had added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an extension to world heritage site of DHR (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway). The UNESCO world heritage site the become known as Mountain Railways of India.

NMR Route

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway route starts from the railway station (MTP) Mettupalayam to Ooty or Udhagamandalam railway station (UAM) run by Ooty toy train. The Ooty to Coonoor toy train route also comes under  Nilgiri Mountain Railway route run by Ooty train.

Mettupalayam to Ooty Train Operators

The MOR (Ministry of Railways) will manage the following of all its assets, stations, railway lines, track vehicles. The SR (Southern Railway Zone) works the day – to – day management and also maintenance. But the following many programs, divisions, and IR departments are responsible for operating, maintaining and repairing the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Mettupalayam to Ooty Train route)
